Abuja, Nigeria —In a broadcast on Sunday, August 4, 2024, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu addressed the nation regarding the recent violent protests that have erupted in various states across Nigeria.
President Tinubu expressed deep sorrow over the loss of lives and the destruction of public and private properties in states such as Borno, Jigawa, Kano, and Kaduna. He condemned the violence and called for an immediate halt to further protests, urging protesters and organizers to seek dialogue instead.
He commiserated with the families of those who lost their lives and emphasized the need for public order, vowing that the government would not allow a few individuals with political agendas to destabilize the nation. He reassured Nigerians that law enforcement agencies would protect lives and properties responsibly.
The President highlighted his administration's achievements in the past 14 months, including significant economic reforms such as the removal of fuel subsidies and the abolition of multiple foreign exchange systems, which have led to increased government revenue and a reduction in the nation’s debt burden. He also noted improvements in the non-oil sector and significant strides in infrastructure development, including major projects like the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway and Sokoto-Badagry Highway.
Tinubu underscored his commitment to youth empowerment, mentioning initiatives like the student loan scheme, the Consumer Credit Corporation, and various youth employment programs. He also announced ongoing efforts to boost food production and reduce inflation through agricultural incentives and tariff reductions on essential goods.
In his closing remarks, President Tinubu urged all Nigerians, especially the youth, to choose hope and unity over fear and division. He reaffirmed his administration's dedication to improving national infrastructure and creating opportunities for young people, emphasizing that the results of these efforts would soon be visible and beneficial for all.
Finally, he called on security operatives to maintain peace, law, and order while respecting human rights, and he thanked the nation for its attention, praying for continued blessings on Nigeria.
